Gastroenterology is the field of science and medicine that deals with the diseases of the stomach, small and large intestines, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, and oesophagus.

The oesophagus is a muscular tube joining your mouth with the stomach and pushes the food through while swallowing.

The stomach is the digestive organ of the body where the food breaks down by acid and then enters the intestines. To protect the wall of the stomach from acids, it has a special lining of cells.

Other organs of the digestive system are the small and large intestine. When the food passes through the small intestines, the organ breaks down the nutrients and then absorbs them. Water absorption takes place while the passage through the colon and at last all the waste passes as faeces out of the body.

The liver present on the right side of your body just underneath the ribs is of football size. It is the storage part for sugar, vitamins and iron that is necessary for cells in the body.

Also, it helps to clear the waste products from the body and produces supplements that help in improving the immune system. The bile juice that helps in proper digestion is also produced by the liver.

The pancreas lies in the back of the mid-abdomen, and its function is to produce digestive juices and hormones like insulin which are mandatory for regulating blood sugar.

The outpatient procedures of gastroscopy and colonoscopy are performed under the specialised doctors known as gastroenterologist through the endoscopy suite. There is a dedicated team of nurses & technicians who work under our most experienced Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad.
